Help Feed A Child

Help Feed A Child FreeRice.com

“What if just knowing what a word meant could help feed hungry people around the world? Well, at FreeRice it does.. The totals have grown exponentially.” - The Washington Post.

Although starting out as a site for students to learn their vocabulary words for English class, FreeRice has become an international sensation to aid in the ending of world hunger. At the time, English vocabulary was the only subject offered on the site, but now more than 5 major subjects are available, including Italian, Pre-Algebra, Chemistry and Geography.

The site was created by teacher, John Beene, in 2007 and was sold to the UN World Food Program (UNWFP) in March of 2009. Since that time, just short of 70 billion grains of rice have been donated to underprivileged countries around the world.

This is how it works: for each question a person gets right, site sponsors will pay for 10 grains of rice. The grains are then donated to countries including Bangladesh, Cambodia and Uganda. 19, 200 grains of rice are needed to feed one person, and although that may seem like a lot, remember that there are others playing at the same time as you.

Things that make FreeRice unique are that it gives 100% of the donations made towards ending hunger, has a pronunciation button so that you can hear the word being spoken, and nothing extra is needed to donate the rice; once you get the answer right, your donation is made.

There are currently 60 different difficulty levels in the English vocabulary subject, and FreeRice is working on adding more to said subject and the other subjects, alike.

According to the UNWFP, a child dies every 6 seconds due to hunger related causes, so what are you waiting for? Aid is just a click away.
