Don't Be Satisfied With the World

Don't Be Satisfied With the World Global Melting

Global warming is not news to us. We've been burning fossil fuels since the 1850s, and it has undoubtedly changed our atmosphere. But the change has just begun.

While flipping through the channels this afternoon, I noticed yet another Discovery Channel special on global warming. I only chose that program because nothing else was on, and it never hurts be know what's going on with the fate of our planet.

The scientist on the program talked about how the change to come will greatly outweigh what has happened so far. If we don't do something about it...

And that's when I stopped.

I'm am not going to say that I am pro-actively fighting the degradation of our atmosphere, because I'm not. I'm just like every other teenager in the US, more worried about grades and friends and music and boys than I am about what will happen in 100 years. We sit around, waiting and thinking that someone, somewhere, is doing something about this crisis. If everyone is thinking that, we're certainly not accomplishing much, are we? We are satisfied by hybrid cars, new environmentally-friendly products, and talk of alternative energy sources that may never become a reality. Talk just won't do the job. Thinking, waiting, and hoping, won't do the job.

I refuse to just be satisfied. If we are always just satisfied with one tiny thing, then that one tiny thing is all we're going to get. By voicing our opinions, throwing new ideas for saving our world out into the open, we are challenging the Man to step up and make something new, bigger, better, save-the-planet-y-er. Humans thrive off of competition. I think that if we show the market that we want the real deal, and that we are willing to support new ideas and improve on the old ones, they will step up to the challenge. But relying on the Man will only get us so far.

But we can't be satisfied with just that.

We must fight. We must save our world. We must win.
