Heck yes I am!
Band geek. Band nerd. Band loser. Freak with instrument. The list can go on depending on how 'creative' (or evil) someone can be. Now while these names may offend some band students, I take each and every single one of them as a compliment. My friends and I even joke about it.
Changing stereotypes may be a goal we have for the world, but an important part about making a change is pushing past the negatives and getting to the positives. If someone is calling me a band geek, it is because I am involved in school band. Why on Earth would someone take this as a compliment?
Being called a band geek means to me that someone has noticed that I am involved in band. This not-so-complimentary phrase brings a smile to my face because my dedication to something I enjoy shows through.
I am a talented musician. The best? I am no where close, but of those people who call me band geeks, I could out flute play them any day of the week (depending on who they are obviously. For this sake it is a non-instrumentalist).
Geek? You are smart and academically talented. Jock? You are athletically talented. History nerd? The ancient Romans would bow to your knowledge. Spazzy weirdo. You have the gift of being unique. Prep? You hold yourself to high standards and aim to reach them. Defeat those stereotypes.
Next time some real loser says something stupid to you, let it define you. It is what makes you noticeable. That guy on the football team... or that girl who dresses like a prep... that kid who plays the drums...that girl with a mohawk.
Unique qualities about you set you apart. Now while you may be "That kid with the mohawk..." the person trying to kick you down about your unique and funky hairstyle will be remembered as "That jackass who made fun of everybody."
If I was you, I'd rather be remembered for something fun or something that defined my personality than for being a jackass.
Embrace the stereotyping and be your own person!
Accept and love yourself for who you are. Band geek? And proud! Mohawk weirdo? Brave to be different! History nerd. Dedicated to academic standards! Stupid jock. Deadly in competition!
When that jackass of a kid comes waltzing through the hallways and makes another ridiculous comment, just laugh. Because the only thing that makes them noticeable and unique is the bad way they treat others.
